A Bad Antler Day
A deer with unusual antlers. This poor buck must have been grazing near a hammock and as he got closer to the hammock, something must have startled him and he brought his head up underneath the hammock and caught it in his antlers. He couldn’t dislodge it, so he took it with him and now he is wearing it as a decoration. It’s a good thing that antlers are shed or he would still be carrying it around!

Amazing find/shot! the poor deer collected too much junk for his own good…
Diane Schuster
At first it looked as if he had collected someone’s christmas lights, but after studing the picture, I think that it was someone’s hammock that he came up under, when he raised his head and he couldn’t get rid of it so he took it with him.
goddessteri211
I often wonder if he was ever able to get that stuff off his poor head!! He probably needs to see a chiropractor for neck pain!! GREAT SHOT!! TERI~
Diane Schuster
I’m glad and probably so was he, that deer shed their antlers, someone must have really wondered if they found his antlers after he shed them.
Jen Whyte
Oops! you never know what you’re gonna come up with when you do the ’’showing off to the girls’’ act … absolutely priceless capture
Diane Schuster
Thanks Jen, it was a lucky find, He didn’t even get up when I approached. I kept taking pictures and moving closer and closer. I think that he was so tired from carrying all of that stuff that he just wanted to rest!

What a rare shot! I love it. How close were you?
Diane Schuster replied
He let me stand within 3-5 feet of him! Glad that you liked it! Thanks for favoriting one of my other pieces!
Lori Walton
Wow ….. I sure hope they were able to help this poor thing. Humans and Wildlife just don’t make a good mix sometimes.
Diane Schuster replied
I agree Lori, I’m afraid when I saw him that my mouth hung open for a few minutes, before I even thought about getting my camera! Thanks for commenting! Also it’s good that they shed their antlers!
Lori Walton
LOL ….. I was just thinking …. I certainly hope the guy who owned this wasn’t in it at the time. LOL
Diane Schuster replied
Very funny, I never thought of that!! lol!

Diane Schuster replied
Thanks brirose, we did notify animal control, I don’t know what happened after that, I didn’t see him again. I figured that it was good that they shed their antlers each year, then at least he could get rid of it eventually!
cdudak
Feel sorry for this poor guy, hope he got rid of all that junk from his antlers…Kay
Jane Best
Amazing that you were able to get so close and get this good shot. Maybe you could make a little sign and post it around asking if anyone is missing a hammock and attach this picture to it! (-:
Diane Schuster replied
Very cool idea, Jane! Thanks for your great comments!
peyote
what an incredible picture
Quite shocking but I’m glad to hear they shed their antlers.
And yet at the same time its quite becoming ;)
xXx
Diane Schuster replied
Yes, he had quite a do! Thanks for your great comment!
Ted Widen
Wow! such a rare photo opportunity, and to have him allow you to approach is likely a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Aside from his plight, you’ve achieved a beautifully perfect photo of him. I guess if you find him next year with a similar hair-do, you’ll know that our pity for his unfortunate situation is completely unnecessary as he seeks out this very manly display :)
Diane Schuster replied
Ted, this photo is 3 years old and I haven’t seen the likes of it since. Thank goodness, although I feel very lucky that he allowed me to make his antler do immortal, I wouldn’t wish this on any animal! I love your silliness though and your comments are always insightful and funny! Keep them coming! Please!
Steve Chapple
An image that is both wonderful but sad. Great capture….a rare event captured so well.
Diane Schuster replied
Thanks again, Steve, I bet when the people that owned that hammock, put it out, they never thought that it would end up this way!
cherylc1
Wow~amazing capture!
Diane Schuster replied
Thanks cheryl!
StarKatz
Poor thing I hope it got it off… can you approach these things without them attacking? He looks kinda proud though LOL … gorgeous! :0)
Diane Schuster replied
Hi StarKatz, love your name! I was able to get within 3 feet of him, he was lying down and never tried to get up and leave! He didn’t really seem to mind carrying all of that stuff around with him, so I got the impression that it had been with him for awhile! Thanks for commenting and thanks for the watch!
Diane Schuster
Tamara Kenneally
Oh gosh! I want to find him and get that off his head! Poor thing! Great image.
Heather Mudge

Great shot. You should add it to the “Deer Me!” group as well as “Antlers, Racks and Hooves” . Very unique catch.
Diane Schuster replied
It has been in Deer Me but I didn’t know that the other group existed, I’ll check it out, thanks for the great comment and the visit, come back soon! Dee
Diane Swarts
Wow! is all I can say! fantastic close-up! I thought it was some kind of turbin at first! Poor creatures and mankinds stuff that they get into. Reminds me of the birds you see all tangled in fishing wire. very sad. Yet hilarious at the same time.
Diane Schuster replied
You know, I agree with you on things that our wildlife get into, it is a real shame that we can’t be more careful. I have to admit that I found this a little humorous, I’m so glad that he was able to get rid of this when he shed his antlers, I bet if anyone found the antlers later, they sure wondered. Thanks for the fav! Dee
Allan Erickson
And… he’s so much more fashionable than all the other young bucks…
Diane Schuster replied
Yes, he did have a brand new do, I bet he wanted to fire his antler dresser though! lol! Thanks for the great comments! Dee

steppeland
Oh, my… that really is sad – and a unique find and shot! Similarly, I saw a dove who had a plastic bag over her neck… it was flying behind her like a parachute.. Must have been slowing her down very much. Sadly I was at work and didn’t have my camera with me. Wonder whether she would have got rid of that… This photo… : just great!
Diane Schuster replied
Hi steppeland, it was very sad and I felt almost guilty for taking a photo, however I knew that he would loose that mess when he shed his antlers. That poor dove sounds sad too, hope that she finally got that off! Thanks for the great comments and fav! Dee
