Boeing B-17G Flying Fortress 44-8846 “Pink Lady”
There were two B-17s at Duxford, sadly the second one, ‘Sally B’ was grounded due to ongoing engine troubles. Thankfully, the French example was flightworthy and able to put on an exceptional display.
The Duxford airshow is one of the biggest warbird airshows going around. If big fast jets are your thing, then this wont be for you, the only jet here was a F-86 saber that took off and departed very early on!
The weather didnt quite hold up for the whole day but thankfully this had no effect on the flying. The spot I settled on seemed no more than 200 feet away from some of the planes as they flew almost overhead! Nothing quite like the sound of a big V12 Merlin roaring away. There seems to be a habit of setting up large tents and windbreakers right on the flight line though, and this spoils it a bit. Thankfully for RIAT, they banned the practice.
Theres a very good write up on the history of this aircraft here: http://www.touchdown-aviation.com/flying-legend...
