Spearfish Canyon is one of the most scenic drives in South Dakota. The road to this location is closed in winter and only accessible by foot or by snowmobile. This is also the location of some of the final scenes of the movie “Dances With Wolves” featuring Kevin Costner.

OH my, Dawne this is magnificent and makes me think of my Ansel Adams! Wow I love it in b & w, such great detail revealed and such great tones captured, not to mention that wonderul pan of light over the mountain!
Thank you Joanne! I loved it in black and white as well…am hoping the foreground is not too dark. It seems ok on my computer but my monitor tends to lie.

Gorgeous!! Looks like you went to all the places we did but I know I could not do it in the snow!!
Thanks Leslie… it is a treat in winter.. and the day wasn’t so bad (31). Being in the canyon keeps most of the wind away which is 90% of the trouble with winter in SD!

Thank you! You will have to make the trip sometime in winter… its so pristine and beautiful!

Beautiful and majestic this is!.. Great that you
went in on foot.. good job! :0)
Hard to tell with their helmets on.. but I think I was getting some dirty looks from the snowmobilers! Took me a while to figure out I was on “their” trail before I found a foot trail.

Dawne, you have honored my most favorite of places on God’s earth with this photo. My wife and I get out there as often as we can, but that is never quite often enough.
Thank you Scott! Its great to meet someone else who has shared the experience of SD’s little corner of heaven on earth! I love it out there absolutely any time of year and unfortunately it is a 6 hour drive even for me.
