Much of South Dakota has been described as barren and lonely. I believe this was only true prior to the advent of cell phone technology. It seems there are almost no places left on earth at all where one can be alone. Truly alone. Away from people, computers, instant messaging, texts, phone calls. But if you head towards Scenic, South Dakota in the interior of the Badlands you will succeed in dropping off the radar – so to speak. I found, on this morning, that in the great desolation, and loneliness of that landscape that the play of light on the land gave me more of a feeling of strength and joy and connection than I could have imagined was possible so far removed from humanity.
