Ice on the Missouri River
This past winter was exceptionally cold and the morning I photographed the ice in the river was five below zero degrees. It was lightly snowing and I stood on a bridge to take the photograph. The picture lends itself well to a black and white scene depicting, for me, the austerity of that morning. The ice was moving very quickly and the sound of the miniature ice bergs rubbing up against each other added to the chill.
photographed from the Vermillion, Newcastle bridge on the South Dakota, Nebraska border.

I really like the composition. And it does convey the cold very well. -5 is pretty darn cold. I wish we had the sound that you heard as well. Where along the Missouri?
Dawne Olson replied
Thanks John! This picture was taken along the stretch of the Missouri river that creates the border between South Dakota and Nebraska.

Hi Gavin.. and thanks! yes it was one of the worst cold snaps all winter. I kept jumping back in the car to warm my fingers up enough to manipulate the settings on my camera.

Wow! Dawne! I just CAN’T comprehend that cold! BRRRRRRRRRRRR! What a great shot!
Dawne Olson replied
Thanks for your enthusiastic response! It is ridiculous how cold it can get. I didn’t stand there for too long admiring it.
