The Gayatri Mantra by doctorharrison

Posted on May 01, 2009

Gayatri means “She who protects the singer”. (from gai, to sing and trai, to protect).

Gayatri is also one of the many names for the divine Mother.

This Mother protects her children, and leads them to self-realization.

My favorite story about the Gayatri mantra involves Deva Premal,
one half of the amazing kirtan duo from Germany.

Her Mom sang the Gayatri to her daily while Deva was in the womb.

And Deva was born, well….enlightened.

Please see her video on youtube for the evidence (Deva Premal and Miten).
Her name means “Goddess of Love”.

Swami Sivananda, the physician-saint from India, wrote, “Of all the mantras, the supreme and most potent is the great and glorious Gayatri.”

Below is my favorite English translation, followed by the Sanskrit:

“Oh God, we meditate on Your divine Light.
Bestow your blessings on us so that our intellect may rise
higher and higher to the highest consciousness.
Help us to meditate, be successful in life and realize God.”

Om Bhur Bhuvah Svaha
Tat Savitur Varenyam
Bhargo Devasya Dhimahi
Dhiyo Yo Nah Prachodayat.

The first line of the mantra is actually an invocation….
to the earth plane (bhur), the astral (heavenly) plane (bhuva lokah) and
each and every plane beyond (Svaha).

The mantra is the bow.

The spirit-soul is the arrow.

Love (God) is the target.

Draw back the bowstring of mantra/meditation,
hit the target and become One with it.

love & shanti,
