Born in N. Kingstown, RI in 1970, under the name, Antony Galbraith, DoAn found artistic expression early in life. As a child he was fascinated by birds, animals, and the natural world—often spending much of his time drawing and painting what he observed.
In 2002, he took Buddhist precepts and was given the dharma name DoAn, which means “Way of Peace”. He spent two years learning traditional Asian brush painting and calligraphy. It was a result of his study and practice of Buddhism that he was able to find a new artistic direction.
DoAn’s work compares different cultures, combines mythologies, folklore, and the natural world to create paintings that mix representational, abstract and expressionist styles. Rich, saturated color is often the unifying thread to his varied range of work. Meditation is also an important element in the creation of his work.
