Copyright Article by Dave Moilanen

I came across an interesting article about copyrights. It makes for a very interesting read. It really does make one think about our copyrights.

You can read the article here:
Mind Your Business: You Will Lose All The Rights to Your Own Art

Oh, dear. That would just cause most of us to stop creating. What a drab world we would have then.

  • Dave Moilanen:

Thanks for looking Deborah. Corporate greed strikes again. Money talks and us little people walk.

That’s absolutely horrendous news and a complete nightmare for any artist that has ever wanted to go beyond the Art Hobby phase, and turn their Art Passion into a career and a livelihood.
Art is far more spiritual and from the soul than those money hungry nut-cases will ever realize. Art also pays the bills for the skilled artisan, but those corrupt organizations want to take not their Cut, but the Whole Pie !

  • Dave Moilanen:

Hi reflector. Isn’t that the truth!

    It sure is Lucinda.

It sure is the truth Dave ( and Hi, I noticed your name on Flipteez’s folio pages ). It’s frightening for any artist that has / or wants a career in the arts. For someone like me trying to bust my way in to an Arts Career it has an extra dimension in a way. We struggle to be known and have our work gain commercial value of some sort so that we can dedicate our lives to making art.

But this makes it look like there will be no money in it for the small-fries, so we can all keep our creations locked up in our houses and gathering dust on our PC’s – there is no chance of commercial success for the small-fry so he / she should just keep their art to themselves !

  • Dave Moilanen:

Hey reflector. It’s getting to the point where the corporate greed is putting the squeeze on folks like us. It’s like you said, it’s hard enough for us to get ‘noticed’, but now we have to follow the ’company’s’ rules? This really sucks.

  • Dave Moilanen:

Hi Stephanie. Thanks for letting me know about this. It looks like the link is broken. I’ll keep an eye on it and see what I can do.

OK, this is sorta just my little rant on this disturbing subject. Just thought I’d warn you!

I’ve read the article and have had time to digest it a bit. Naturally, I’m not one bit happy about this. While the article only mentions that the US and Europe are working on passing the Orphan Bill, what does that potentially mean for the rest of the world? For Canadian and Australian artists, and everyone else? Even if such a ludicrous law never gets passed in Canada (as I pray it WILL NOT), I will still feel the injustice of it all. I mean, I’ve only just read an article about the possibilty of it and I feel as though I’ve just been slapped in the face!

Just think about what kind of repercussions this could have – a very prominent part of who we are as cultures and individuals will die. Creation of art will become an isolated activity for fear of having one’s intellectual property stolen. Online art communities will vanish. And for what? For the rich greedy bastards to get even richer. Honestly, what is this world coming to?

  • Dave Moilanen:

Hi Stephanie. You rant and rant as loud as you can! I can see a gloomy vision of a corporation getting their greedy fingers into the globaliaztion of copyrights. All they need is a starting point. They are going to make it so that if we want to play, we have to pay. The world is going down the toilet and somebody just flushed it.

The link worked fine for me – is this for real??? I’ve heard of orphaned work but never really y knew what it was. So what if we watermark everything we own then? Who would want it? Copywrite protected or not?

  • Dave Moilanen:

    It’s getting crazy Jan.
