A photographic taste of Nicaragua

I’ve received quite a few request from friends and family to see some of the images from my recent trip. I’ve got a ton of work to do on them and it will probably take me the better part of a year before I am done with the images to my satisfaction.

I have however processed a few shots just to give everyone a taste of what life was like down there. Bare in mind though, these have all been very quickly processed. I’ll add images to my portfolio once they are completely finished and ready for printing.

I’ll write more about my experiences and thoughts on Nicaragua in future posts. In the meantime, I hope you enjoy some of the images.

Cheers,
Dave

San Jaun Del Rio Coco – a small coffee town in the middle of the northern mountains (very typical of the region):

Some of the many kids I met along the journey

|

Our accommodations which were actually quite nice for the region.
The Kitchen:

The shower (no such thing has a hot shower here):

The toilet. Luckily this had a handle to flush. Many homes and public restrooms require you to slush a bucket of water manually into the toilet in order to flush. Nicaraguan plumbing also cannot handle toilet paper so even the most expensive homes, you cannot flush it down).

...and the washing bin for clothes, dishes and hands:

The next few images were taken in the Spanish colonial town of Leon. Needless to say, I went a little wild with all the incredible colours and textures, especially with all the incredible homes and cathedrals.

Every town has it’s own markets and they are always filled with so much energy. They are also great places to pick up some cheap, good food (a massive plate of rice, beans, fresh tortillas, salad and meat – chicken, beef or pork, will set you back a whole dollar!

I even managed to actually take some images of the coffee harvest which was one of the main reasons for the trip (and was also done for an upcoming show):
Freshly picked coffee in all its glory:

In the field (the women seem to do all the picking while the men have all the ‘foreman’ jobs)

The weigh-in at the end of the day to determine how much they made:

Many more to come later…..

These are absolutely wonderful David – all of a sudden I want to travel to Nicaragua, and it’s never really been on my list before.

Really looking forward to seeing the images you are truly happy with – even if it does take a year :)

Cheers, everyone. Thanks for the kind words.

If anyone is at all interested in Nicaragua, please give me a holler. They are by far some of the most beautiful and friendly people on the planet. Despite what you might believe, it is also one of the safest places to travel in all of Latin America!

David, thank you for portraying Latin America, my land. Those incredible colours, the warm smile, the affectionate people, the earth, the worn hands, the bright Nicaraguan folklore, the lovely architecture, the chipped walls, the Spanish heritage.

It is a moving journey portrayed.
