Felicity is an 18 inch jointed vinyl doll with to the waist auburn hair, sparkling green eyes, and a sprinkle of freckles across her face. She was manufactured by the Pleasant Doll Company between the years 1986 and 1998. In 1982, the company became a subsidiary of Mattel Toys and this doll was made prior to that time. Hence, she is what the collectors call a “Pre-Mattel” and is more valuable than her Mattel counter parts. My Felicity was purchased for $40.00, plus shipping, several years ago from another doll collector. Now that Felicity has been retired from production, the prices for this doll far exceed that. American Girl dolls, new, are running about $160.00 per doll.
The dolls portray ten-year-old girls of a variety of ethnicities living in various times throughout American history. They are sold with accompanying books told from the viewpoint of the girls. Originally the stories focused on various periods of American history, but were expanded in 1995 to include characters and stories from contemporary life. A variety of related clothing and accessories is also available. Pleasant Company was founded in 1986 by Pleasant Rowland, and its products were originally purchasable by mail order only.
