Diamond in the Rough

Though choice was not given
you hold the honor
of falling victim to carry
the burden of sins cast
by others -
long before your coming.

Those eyes of yours
shed life deep into my shadows,
wrinkling in love and laughter,
or gazing in soulful amazement
at this treasure you have found.

No precious jewel will
you find here my love,
this diamond carries
its flaws and the scratches
run deep, discoloring
the stone, making her
less than perfect.

Heavy will be the load
should you desire to remain
for love to mine eyes
is not a pleasure
to be triumphantly rejoiced
but a slow death
full of agony and torture.

I have found at times in my marriage and with other relationships, I feared that there was a big, sometimes huge gap between who I believed I was and what others thought I was.
