Penitente Church

A Penitente church a small town in New Mexico.

The Penitente are a small Christian sect dating back to the 4th Century. In New Mexico the community is private & sometimes referred to as a “secret society”. They are know for extreme practices including self-flagellation.

It was interesting, in one small New Mexican town we were literally chased away from photographing the outside of a Penitente church. However at this particular location a sole woman was inside cleaning & preparing the facility for a special event for one of her children. She was very kind and invited us inside so we could see it. It was beautiful. Far from ornate, the small and plain church was unique and peaceful. Although, it was August and quite hot, only one small window air conditioner attempted to cool the entire building.

Taken with a Canon 20D.
