Javelina Harmony

Daniel J. McCauley IV

Javelina Harmony

A mother Javelina fighting with another of her pack over some scraps of food in the Arizona desert.

They are called Javelina because of their razor-sharp tusks, Spanish for javelin or spear. They are the only wild, native, pig-like animal found in the United States. They are more slender and 30-50 pounds smaller than pigs, have longer, thinner legs and smaller hooves. Javelina usually travel in packs of 6-12, but I have seen up to 24 together, and you can usually smell them before you actually see them.

    Nice shot!
How did you get so close?
I would have been afraid that they might take a bite out of me.

  • Daniel J. McCa... replied

Thanks kindly, Paul. They are actually pretty docile, except when they feel threatened or have babies around. I have had an entire pack walk calmly right past me, on the other hand, one slit the throat of my parent’s dog with their tusk (she survived, barely). However, the secret here was that I was on the other side of a short wall : )

Superb Action- They look like nasty critters

  • Daniel J. McCa... replied

They’re pretty nice, smelly, but nice (for the most part), but I wouldn’t want to feel the end of those tusks ; ) Thanks very much, my friend!

This is a great capture and interesting description! There’s a site “javalinahunter “that makes mention of some attacks on humans and their pets. I wouldn’t want to stumble upon them at night that’s for sure…

  • Daniel J. McCa... replied

Thanks Dyle, I’ll check that out. My parents’ dog was attacked – a tusk slit her throat, but she was lucky and survived. I have calmly walked thru an entire pack several times with no problems, but you do want to be careful :-) Much appreciated!
