Artist's Description

We enjoyed our last day of summer at our favorite nearby beach and as if to put an exclamation point on the magic of the day, we were blessed with the sight of a sundog! It lasted for a couple of hours at dusk and we saw it on both sides and on top of the sun on the ride home in the skiff. (My camera is usually safely packed away in camera bag and then in a waterproof bag when underway tho.)

The sight of it foretold the coming storm as I knew it was only visible because of ice crystals.

A sundog is a rainbow-like spot in a cirrus cloud. Light shining through ice crystals in the cloud makes a sundog, much like light shining through raindrops makes a rainbow. Sundogs may appear as a colored patch of light to the left or right of the sun, 22° distant and at the same distance above the horizon as the sun, and in ice halos. They can be seen anywhere in the world during any season, but they are not always obvious or bright. Sundogs are best seen and are most conspicuous when the sun is low.

This sundog wasn’t very bright so I added a grad filter in LR3 to compensate for my lack of a filter when taking the shot.
