I got ONE! by DJ LeMay

He was so funny with his big catch; he just played with it! And then his brother came along and they both fought over it. They obviously both had their bellies full as they soon lost total interest in it and ended up play fighting together. What fabulous entertainment!

Taken just north of Port Alexander, at Port Armstrong Hatchery on Baranof Island in SE Alaska.

These brown bears, known as the ABC (Admiralty, Baranof and Chichagof) Island Bears, have unique DNA. Although related genetically to all browns and grizzlies in the world, which are genetically divided into two groups, the ABC Island bears in one group and all of the others in the second group, the ABC Island brown bear’s DNA also has a relationship to polar bear DNA, which sets them apart. In fact, the bears of the ABC islands have a type of DNA that is more similar to that of polar bears than of other brown bears. Just possibly, the island bears may be descendants of an ancestral type of bear that also gave rise to the polar bear.

great capture and very interesting narrative, dj! I thought polar bears weren’t bears at all but a kind of weasel but clearly not. Learn something every day on RB!

  • lol… REALLY!! Are you quite sure you don’t have one leg longer than the other?! Where on earth did you hear that?
    Thanks very much, Nadine!
