Shanghai is an interesting place, once holding the title “Paris of the East” and being famed for it’s architecture. There’s more to Shanghai these days than the fast paced lifestyle, stuffed trains and endless hawkers. Definitely a lot more than the high rise buildings and neon signs.
In the Bund, the alleyway type streets have a character of their own, entirely different from the rest of China, and the rest of Shanghai for that matter. Something serene and calm, even during rush hour.
Lovely shot, reminds me of the alleys here in Taipei. Very grungy, but strangely isolated from the rest of the city, as you describe. Turn down a couple of these alleys, and all of a sudden you’re in a different world, and even the traffic seems distant.
