surely this isnt true people do because its history in the making!!!
he said people want the strange pics how about the local surrondings doesnt that mean anything any more?
in other words he just wouldnt buy them because he didnt want to take a4 pics thats all we have for now. just wanted a start to build a business/hobbie that i like doing is this so hard for him just to give me a chance. this has been really hard cos it has knocked me back and im now wondering wether its all worth it!!!

oakes – I had a local store look at my work and said they really wanted to see it. The problem being is they want 40% of the sale price. I pay for the printing , framing and getting it to the store. They provide the space to hang it and take 40%?
So I told them nicely that its not worth my while and then I found Redbubble.carolssecrets
I dont know too much about this yet but I have been reading a book about “selling your work” from the library. It says to look at publications that print that kind of work as everyone has different taste. So if you find a place that sell landscapes that would be the place to go. It is just a different market at different places is all. Dont be discouraged you where at the wrong place.
This book also states to look at calendars with similar photos that you take & find out the publisher from the back & contact them by phone & call about submitting your work.
I heard that calendar publishers pay really well too!

These art galleries are usually struggling to survive. They seem to have certain artists that they like. I think you have to have some kind of connection to the gallery. Don’t be discouarged. Very few of us could sell our work in galleries. I sold some of my stuff in Starbucks but the kids there knew me. I think on-line is the best hope for all of us. Let’s face it, most people go to Target if they want a picture. Don’t let it worry you. You have some beautiful work.

Stick with it Carl. The knock backs come more often than the helping hands. When I lived in Orkney I found it difficult to break into mainstream as I was an outsider and could not afford to set my own gallery up. I managed to find half a dozen outlets, some less known and newer places, who would stock my prints and cards. I never had anyone buy outright but everyone did sale or return. The most I usually paid in commission was 30% but on average it was 20-25%. I set the retail price there and the monthly payment arrived less their cut.
In the Borders I found it harder and only secured one outlet before moving to Ireland where I could not find one place who was interested in stocking my works.
Now I am back in the Borders, only 2 months, and I have 2 outlets stocking my work and a further 2 which have said yes and one who I have to convince. I am also pushing several other places and waiting on another for acceptance or refusal. None are purchasing but SOR, the difference this time is I am not setting the retail prices but giving them a price for which I want for each piece and they can set their own sale prices. I have had several turn me down so it is not all smooth running.
The point being Carl is that most of the places are wanting landscapes, flowers and places of interest in the local areas. I am finding it harder to get my more arty/different works into anywhere at present but will persevere. Stick with it and you will succeed.
I am not making much money at present but I am getting more and more publicity which in turn will bring more rewards. Feel free to email me Carl I always enjoy a chat with fellow bubblers but more than anything keep at it.

I had similar experience when writing my own book, shops & publishers said no as true life doesnt sell…what!! course it does…
So I took out a loan & self edited, self published & got it into a few local bookshops in cumbria & bolton by just mithering them…so after selling just over 100 copies & the biggest store taking 35% ! I kinda broke even…Good luck the moral is dont give up…just keep trying…Anyone with contacts to shift the remainder of my published books please contact me by email see my website: www.bevsbook.co.uk
Thanks x :)
