Artist's Description

Cooper’s Hawk

Marana, AZ using a Canon Powershot SX40HS

Cooper’s Hawk preys on small birds, often making swift surprise attacks at bird feeders. Because of the similar bold raids on domestic poultry, this species was once shot as a “chicken hawk” and a bounty was paid for it; this practice was ended in the mid-20th century.

Coopers is a very common sight in autumn migration, as well as in deciduous and mixed woodlands.

Identification Pale nape fives capped look, heavier legs and longer tail than Sharp-shinned Hawk

VOICE A nasal kih, much lower-pitched than Sharp-shinned Hawk, usually given in

long, staccato, chattering series.
