Might be mistaken for a large fuzzy mosquito’s because of the long proboscis on some species, but the beak is for sipping nectar, not blood. Most species are covered in long hairs and/or delicate, often silvery scales that wear off rapidly as the insect ages. Many species have ornate dark patterns on the wings. Their hovering flight helps reinforce their resemblance to bees, hence the family’s common name. Larvae are parasitic on the immature stages of immature insects.
