Pyrrhuloxia

A cardinal of brushy desert areas and rachlands, especially near streams with mesquite, acacia, and hackberry. They are found in dry, open areas more often than Northern Cardinals and appears to better tolerate the extreme aridity and heat of the Chihuahuan and Sonoran Deserts.

Feeding on seeds and insects, uses a strong bill to crush mesquite beans. Moves in small groups through thorny brush and branches. Nest is a loosely built cup of grasses, twigs, and bark strips hidden in dense, thorny brush. Female lays 3-4 speckled white eggs.

VOICE very similar to Northern Cardinal but higher
