Funnel Web Spider ~2 by Kimberly Chadwick

Taken in Tucson AZ using a Canon Powershot SX110IS

Several species of Funnel-Web Spiders (Family Agelenidae) are found here in the Sonoran Desert, and their distinctive, funnel-shaped webs are a common sight in areas with grass, leaf litter, and other plant debris.

Funnel-Web Spiders build broad, funnel-shaped, generally non-sticky, horizontal sheet webs just above the ground. The Funnel-Web Spider hides inside the mouth of the funnel and waits for an unsuspecting insect to blunder across the web. When it senses the vibration of an insect walking across its web, a Funnel-Web Spider will race out of its hole and bite the insect, injecting it with venom. Immobilized by the spider’s bite, the insect is then dragged back into the spider’s lair, where it will be eaten.

The Funnel-Web Spiders found in Arizona are harmless to humans and very shy.

Glad to know yours are not dangerous!
Our Funnel-web spiders are some of the world’s most deadly spiders …

  • I am too glad they are not deadly! I would like to say that would stop me from getting to close, but I so have Black Widows in my gallery so I am not that smart…lol

Kimberly, what a great capture, I never thought of spiders as being shy…but I believe it….I am just a bit shy of them as they are us……They never scared me, until, helping a friend move a carpet, Kimberly all I felt was a tiny sting, and upon pulling my hand out from under her carpet, that fast, my hand was solid black, and my heart was racing so fast, I thought it was coming out of my chest…( so to this day I am cautious of them…….Laura

  • OH honey, I bet you were terrified! I sure would have been! I am glad you made it through darlin! Thank you for your constant support and discussions, I always smile when we get to “talk”…lol

Kimberly, your right about being terrified, and since I was one never afraid of any thing…I was really mad at that spider for making me afraid of them…lol!

  • I can understand that completely! If it makes you feel better, I scream and run like a little girl if I see a roach! the big ones will bring me to tears….a horrible phobia to those things…ughh!
