Although its name suggests a desert dweller, the Desert Firetail may be found along shady mountain streams or at pools surrounded by luch woodlands. In the Southwest they are often found around numerous livestock ponds, weedy or grassy stretches of slow moving water, marshes, etc. You aren’t likely to misidentify the small, slender, cherry-red males (females are tan but are usually found among the males).
