Artist's Description

7-15-10

Taken in Tucson, Arizona using a Canon Powershot SX110IS
This is the most common duskywing in the Southwest, where it is at home from mountain meadows to desert flats. It is one of several with white fringes on the hind wings, but the front wings are longer and narrower than those of other duskywings.
Males perch at eye level on branches above streams and arroyos and dart out at any movement. In late morning, they also perch on hilltop shrubs to await passing females. Both sexas visit garden flowers such as lantanas and zinnias and wildflowers such as rabbit-brush in desert washes.
