Artist's Description

Taken at Sweetwater Wetlands in Tucson, Arizona Powershot SX10IS

This hardy species nests in moist pastures and wetlands and forages for seeds, insects, and grain in treetops, fields, and swamplands. In northern areas, it is often the first species to return on spring, the male’s creaky song and flashing red epaulets foretelling winter’s end. After breeding, Red-wingeds may form flocks in the millions.

Bicolored Blackbirds (2 California subspecies) has a black median coverts

VOICE SONG is a harsh, rising hark-a-rree! CALLS include the usual blackbird chk and a higher _pyiu, tyiu, tzit- and tszeeur

  • Each pair of Red-winged Blackbirds raise 2-3 broods per season. Each time they build a new nest, which keeps the nest from becoming infected with parasites that could kill the baby birds.
  • During migration the Red-winged Blackbird can travel at over 30 mph.
  • The Red-winged Blackbird is native to North America.
