Artist's Description

Taken in my back yard in Marana, Az with a Canon Powershot SX100IS

Present on all major land masses of the world, the painted lady surely earns the title of most widely distributed butterfly on earth. A familiar garden sight, it is also prone to large, unidirectional flights for unexplained reasons. During these flights, usually in the spring, city gardens and mountain canyons alike may teem with adults sipping nectar from flowers.

When their wings are together you can see four small eye spots on the hind wings, which separate painted ladies from American ladies. The west coast lady (Vanessa annabella), which is more common to the west, is a brighter orange on its upper side and has a orange (not white) spot on the leading edge of its fore wing.
