This sparrow is restricted to sagebrush plains and especially short grass and mixed-grass prairies of the Great Plains. Habitats that have been lost to agricultural over the past 150 years. It forms relatively large winter flocks that forage in dry plains and deserts.
VOICE Song a long, slow, odd concatation of cardinal-like, sweet notes; chat like fusses, and dry, electric buzzes. Often given in flight display. Calls include a sweet, low tyew or tyew-ee and a wiry buzz.
