American Kestrel ~ Raptor Series by

Taken at Arizona-Sonoran Desert Museum
during Raptor Free Flight Demonstrations in Tucson,Az

One of the most colorful of the world’s raptor, is a diminutive falcon of open habitats. Kestrels nest in cavities excavated by woodpeckers, particularly Northern Flickers, but they also accept artificial nest boxes. They breed most readily in open habitats with plentiful hunting perches. Like shrikes they too are expert mousers, and they also take small birds, bats, insects, reptiles, and even fishon rare occasions.

They perch often on a wire ot fence post for long periods of time watching for prey. They are known to hover over a spot that prey has been spotted before. Upon spotting prey, they swoop and pounce in one swift motion.

For reasons unknown, this species has suffered an decrease on numbers in the East.

My goal is to get my name out there among the vast ocean of Natural photographers. To be known for my skill with a Point & Shoot~

My images are not photo shopped. They have only been adjusted with basic sharpening, contrasting & saturation techniques. I believe that in order to appreciate Nature, you have to capture it as it is, naturally.

Every time I get within 200 feet of these guys, they flee. You have highlighted these marvels in a wondrous way. The lighting is spot on to show their incredible colours and patterns.

  • The museum is a remarkable place to get close to them. If it wasn’t for that, This would not have happened. Thank you Lee-Anne for your support!

    Another beauty!
    How do you make these?

  • Thank you Ted. I use the Picasa program. It is very simple (has to be for me..lol) There is a few templates to chose from then just hit shuffle till I like what comes out….lol. I would love to find a collage program that doesn’t cost an arm and a leg……
