A regular visitor to many campgrounds, the black bear normally does not live up to its ferocious reputation. Though it will defen itself as well as cubs & food supply, it usually retreats from people unless lured by food.
Despite its name, this bear comes in many different colors from pure white to totally black. in the West, most are brown, cinnamon or tan. All are heavy built with small eyes and short round ears. As members of the raccoon family, the bear places all it’s entire foot on the ground, leaving tracks roughly the size and shape of a human footprint, only wider and with claw marks.
Black bears feed on a variety of fruits, nuts, and vegetation, along with insects, meat, and garbage. tho store fat for the winter, it must eat almost on a constant basis throughout Summer & Fall. Black Bears mate in June or July, implantation is delayed until late in the year, when a female is already asleep in her den.
According to the National Center for Health Statistics, you and I are 350 times more likely to be killed by lighting than by a Black Bear.
