Taken today,3-10-10 in Marana, Az with a Canon Powershot SX10IS.

Got off work early and thought I would drive around with flashers on and see what was out. I was about to head for the bus stop (to get the brats) and then there he was on the wire……He was there for a while so I was able to get of a few good shots of him.. I don’t normally post the same image back to back because I even like variety, but seeing that this little guys numbers are declining and I was proud of these shots, I thought I would make the exception to day.

This open-country bird is declining over most of its range. Males impales prey – large insects and small reptiles, amphibians, rodents, and passerines – on barbed wire and thorns to cache food and mark territories (indicating their fitness to potential mates).

With their sharp vision, Loggerheads can spot prey 70 yards away and can carry, using their bills, more than their own weight in flight.

Found in open country, lowland plains, grassy pastures, or hillsides with short grass and low shrubs and trees. Builds cup-like nest in thick shrubs or low trees.

VOICE Song a series of harsh paired phrases repeated at precise intervals. Calls include harsh fusses.

Hehehehe! Did you pick up the brats or did they walk home! :) Yes getting that shot everything else can wait! :) I let my brat catch the bus home! LOL!

    Gabe :)

  • I got there before the bus got there, I am too paranoid and old school to let them walk home. ESPECIALLY when there is a registered offender living on the corner in route to home!

I find these birds fascinating. very nice capture. We have some here but usually way up high on wires.

  • That is why I am so thrilled with being able to capture him this way. I have only one (possibly 2) in my area and they are always very flighty. Do for him to allow me the chance to photograph him was truly an honor (corny, I know)~☺

Lovely, It’s a great feeling to be able to capture an endangered species in the wild!

  • I really is Trish, That would be why I had to put both images up back to back even though It is against my variety ways…lol
