Taken at Reid Park, Tucson, AZ 2010

Hooded Merganser breeds farther south than the larger mergansers, nesting in tree cavities in woodland areas usually near water. It winters in wooded swamps, on freshwater marshes and lakes, and on brackish rivers and estuaries, even in urban settings.

VOICE Male: in display a loud, descending, snoring AHH-WAAAAARRRR (sounding like a leapord frog), ending with a popping PUK! Female; a short burry burrp

Hooded Merganser Pair~

Beautiful! They are such a striking bird. I stopped at Reid Park today (3-9-10) looking for the Mergansers but didn’t see them. The Canvasback ducks were all gone too. Lots of Ringnecks still around though.

  • Well I am glad you said something, now I can re arrange my schedule for something else..lol, Thank you David!

Nice capture of this unique water bird. They always seem to look a bit surprised to me.

  • I agree, but I think I was more surprised to see him..lol he was the only one on this little pond with two females. I “chased” him around in hopes of getting even a semi-decent shot!
