Artist's Description

Harriers are expert mousers, specializing in tundra, meadows, prairies, and farm fields alike. Flying low to the ground rocking back and forth on upswept wings, then dropping down straight down on rodents.

Unlike other diurnal raptors, harriers have an owl like facial disk. Presumably helping them detect prey better by ear. When rodents are plenty, the male of this species has been know to mate with several females. Males will bring food to the nests of multiple mates.

Males are gray in color where the females and immatures are a warmer rusty color. The most obvious field mark is a conspicuous white rump.

VOICE Male gives a rapid series of high-pitched keeh calls. Females and young give a whining seeeuw

Taken in Marana, AZ. Harriers migrate into our area in the fall and stay through winter leaving us for the Summer months
