Artist's Description

Topical relative of falcons aka ( Mexican Eagle). Numerous in desert in grasslands of Texas. The Crested Caracara searches for carrion as it soars through the sky and hunts for live prey from low perches as hawks do. They eat anacondas, boas, and caimen as well. The Caracara is a disappearing breed due to its slow reproductive nature. They are not usually seen in this area unless by accident or “passing through”. They are see dining side by side vultures on the side of the road. They are known as the predators predator. So none the less this is a very rare sighting here in my neck of the woods. It is possible that this is the same guy I saw about this time last year as a juvenile.

VOICE a nasal, guttural growling rattle, sounding almost mechanical; call may be the source of the bird’s Guarani name, traco-traco, from which the name “caracara” is derived.
