Casual observers often refer to this large, stately wader as a crane. in fact the Great Blue Heron is the largest of the North American ardeids, readily identified by its massive bill, blue-gray or dark gray plumage and overall structure.
Great blue is found in nearly every sort of of habitat other than deserts (though the Silverbell lack in in Arizona..lol) It preys mostly on fish but also eats reptiles, amphibians and birds (such as small rails) and will even hunt rodents in dry fields.
“VOICE:http://identify.whatbird.com/obj/31//Great_BlueHeron.aspx A very loud, jarring raak! or raaaannk! and other gutteral calls.
Great blue heron at silverbell lake this morning. I was walking along, and believe it or not, damn near ran into him. I was watching the lake and people and apparently he was too. We looked at each other, he let me get a few shots, and I let him be.
