Artist's Description

Barn Owl, looks like he is winking. Thought it was cute. Taken at ASDM

A widespread but usually scarce species, Barn Owl can be found in almost any open habitat in which prey and nesting sites are available, from deserts to farms to marshes. It preys on mice and on other rodents .

Barb Owl are strikingly pale below and sometimes mistaken for the diurnal snowy owl, but its buff and gray upperparts, dark eyes in a white facial disc, and long legs set it apart from other American Owls. This species is strictly nocturnal and rarely observed in flight even at dusk.

VOICE largest N. American buteo, they have an almost aquiline presence; large0billed and heavy headed, wide-bodied and full-winged, it might be mistaken for an eagle, especially in the rarer dark morph.

This species if restricted to dry open habitats, especially deserts and grasslands, where it hunts small mammals from the air or on a low perch. More than most buteos, ferruginous Hawks spend a lot of time on the ground.

This species is distinctive in all plumages, showing very white remiges (with dusky tips)and a pale rectrices from below.

VOICE a very high, thin, piping wheeee-errrrr, descending, with a somewhat plaintive quality. A bone chillin, screeching hiss, often given in flight; similar to begging vries of fledglings of many larger owls but usually with less nasal quality
