Madera Canyon, Canon Powershot SX40HS, Sept 2013
Formerly known as California Sister, a now distinct species that is confined to oak forests along the West Coast.
The prominent white bands and orange forewing tips tell this large butterfly from the others. Arizona Sisters fly through the oak-covered foothills, canyons and mountains from late Spring to Fall. Both sexes generally ignore flowers, males are seen mostly around mud and other damp spots.
