Artist's Description

Sonoran Desert Toad (a.k.a Colorado River Toad)

Canon Powershot SX40HS, Marana, AZ July 2012

The largest toad in the United States. Olive-green to brown with smooth but lumpy skin. Young have small orange tipped tubercles. It’s prominent paratoid glands distinguish it from the American Bullfrog. Generally a denizen of Sonoran and Chihuahuan Desertscrub, but also found in Semidesert desert grassland and madrean evergreen woodland.

Once know as a Colorado river toad, it now appears extirpated from most of the Colorado River corridor.

Eats invertebrates, lizards, small mammals and other amphibians. Call is a short (about one second) weak rough low pitched waugh. Usually breeds in temporary pools form by Monsoon rains and lay its eggs in strands.

Adults are often found far from water.

Exudes toxic secretions that if ingested can cause hallucinations, paralysis or death in dogs and other
invertebrates.
