Eastern Collard Lizard (Gravid Female) by

Eastern Collard Lizard

A large head with conspicuous black & white collar across back of neck. Yellow brown to green with bluish highlights and light spots. Mature males have a blue-green or orange throat without black center seen in Black-collared Lizard. Gravid females have red-orange spots and bars on sides. Juveniles have been observed with having female coloration.

A wary, feisty lizard that will bite readily and hard at any given chance. Eating other smaller lizards and insects. When fleeing they lift their body and tail dashing along on its hind legs giving the appearance of a fierce little dinosaur.

Mating April-June, laying 1-12 eggs in midsummer. Hatchlings are about 3.5" long. Females develop bright orange bars on the sides during mating season and through the gravid stage. Bars disappearing after eggs are laid.

Ranging through E. Utah and Colorado to extreme SW. Ilinois, sou through central Texas into Mexico and west into Central Arizona.

My images are not photo shopped. They have only been adjusted with basic sharpening, contrasting & saturation techniques. I believe that in order to appreciate Nature, you have to capture it as it is, naturally.
