Coopers Hawk ~ Over the Shoulder by

Cooper’s Hawk

Tucson, Arizona using a Canon Powershot SX40HS

Cooper’s Hawk preys on small birds, often making swift surprise attacks at bird feeders. Because of the similar bold raids on domestic poultry , this species was once shot as a “chicken hawk” and a bounty was paid for it; this practice was ended in the mid-20th century.

Coopers is a very common sight in autumn migration, as well as in deciduous and mixed woodlands.

Identification Pale nape fives capped look, heavier legs and longer tail than Sharp-shinned Hawk

VOICE A nasal kih, much lower-pitched than Sharp-shinned Hawk, usually given in long, staccato, chattering series.

My images are not photo shopped. They have only been adjusted with basic sharpening, contrasting & saturation techniques. I believe that in order to appreciate Nature, you have to capture it as it is, naturally.
