This is Mum on her wedding day in 1960 with her 3 sisters. She was 19 years old at the time. I’ve based it from a photograph which I’ve always loved, using collage, pencil and painted ink.
In many ways she had a very painful life, both physically and emotionally. Sadly, she died of cancer when she was 54 years old. Her husband (my father) died less than 2 years after their wedding and left her with a one year old (me). She then re-married my new lovely ‘Dad’ and had another 3 girls (my sisters).
She was, and still is, a huge inspiration to me. Her wisdom and insight shone through even when she was doing it tough, not to forget her ability to laugh and horse around, sometimes when she oughtn’t!
Her wicked sense of humour was one of the best things about her. I can’t help but think she was struggling to remain serious for this photograph which I based the drawing from!
