"The Task" 1986-02-15

Leaving the cradle
in search of his life
Sword sling in sheath,
hip-pocket knife.

Unprepared for terror
But wearing the brave’s mask.
Boldly into the night he strides
Contemplating the task.

Over road, across hill
Taking each new challenge as it comes
Sweltering heat, freezing cold
His armpits sweat, finger numbs

Along his travels, he finds a companion
Walking alone too, blindly.
Slaying dragons together,
Sharing food & shelter kindly.

Though scars form
And torn muscles cry
It makes no difference
As the journey’s end is nigh.

The destination draws close,
Travelling’s finish nears
Down the companion’s gentle face
Flow heartfelt tears

Sapphire insert in diamond
Glistens with the water of love
As toward the grave they stroll
hand in hand, glove in glove.

But as one adventure ends
So must another start.
Where flesh can no longer take U
There goes the heart.
