early antarctic photography - a superb exhibition by dinghysailor1

Posted on October 16, 2009

Hi folks

Just wanted to pass on a heads up to a fascinating exhibition of work in the harshest place on the planet ..

Open until April 2010 at Edinburgh’s Queens Gallery in Holyrood Palace (over the road to the scottish parliament) it’s well worth the £5-50 to see these outstanding works from the royal photographic collection (and the ticket will take you back for endless free return visits if endorsed in the shop….

THE HEART of the GREAT ALONE” is a new exhibition of remarkable early photography taken in Antarctica by two amazing photographers:Herbert Ponting’s extraordinary images record Captain Scott’s Terra Nova expedition of 1910-13, which led to the tragic death of five of the team on their return from the South Pole while Frank Hurley’s dramatic icescapes were taken during Ernest Shackleton’s Polar expedition on Endurance in 1914-16, which included the heroic sea journey from Elephant Island to South Georgia

A great audio visual treat for bubblers in range of Edinburgh and if you cant make it in person click on and follow through from this link to heaps of content and fascinating detail…

Cheers
Maggie

I can confirm how wonderful these photographs are. We had an Antarctic exhibition here in Wellington a couple of years back, which included works by these two men. They compiled an extraordinary documentary record of early Antarctic expeditions which vividly show the conditions the explorers endured. If people can’t get to Edinburgh to this exhibition, it’s worth remembering about Ponting and Hurley, just in case you get the opportunity to see a similar exhibition at a later date.

    Cheers
