dinghy's here
I’m the one on the right with (with a halo? hehe..) while a friend walks by … (waldo? wally?)......
This the next cropped but otherwise unchanged picture after ‘where’s dinghy?’ below:

I think it might be an something called a ‘brocken spectre’ (I’ve just heard about this tonight at my photography class – thanks mark!) .
One tentative explanation is that ‘a brocken spectre appears when a low sun is behind a climber who is looking downwards into mist….from a ridge or peak.
Both (unaltered) images were taken 1015am Jan 08 as we climbed out of town above the mist hanging over Peebles in scottish borders.
The atmospheric optics group have accepted the image which the wonderful photographer Ern Mainka confirms is a faint version of a brocken spectre glory … now look at his tremendous example of the real thing in full colour below (which makes me feel very humble indeed) entilted:-

(PS It looks like this is my second ‘optical phenomenon’ already his year….
See ‘look up quick!’
how cool is that!)

All that fog adds to the mood – it looks very quiet and peaceful.

nice one… I would crop it and remove the shadows in the foreground… but that’s just me… peace…:-)

Gorgeous image. Love the spindly, spectre-like tree limbs. Lovely.

dinghysailor this is fabulous….. wonderful shot …...well done you….
mlgkats
you always get the mystical feel from fog especially when trees are around , nice capture
mikepaulhamus
very nice effect.
Gene Praag
The fog really makes this shot…..Great capture!
Ern Mainka
Yes it is a Brocken Spectre albeit rather faint. The ‘rainbow’ or mistbow is called a Glory. Your shadow is usually exagerated in size in a brighter Brocken Spectre.
