Hi Maggie, first of all great image, great detail of the stones and wonderful backdrop. It looked very cold and you have captured that well, rather you than me ha ha. As for why are they there, here’s my stab in the dark. I’m presuming they’re in the borders and obviously on the top of a rather large hill, therefore I reckon they are part of some fortifications, maybe a look out post, a hill top fort etc…...probably way off but it’s the best I can come up with :-)
dinghysailor1 replied
oooh you clever thing damien and you are red hot … fortifications and hill fort are spot on …. but why are they here…. like this…...???
(and thanks for the lovely comments too…)
dougie1
to remind you where the bagpipes are hidden?
dinghysailor1 replied
teehee now why would you hide bagpipes when you can hear em coming a mile off…teehee…
:))
richiedean
They are not of the rolling variety and they’re here because they’re not there, or someone tried to make a hill into a mountain !!!! ................ :))
dinghysailor1 replied
LOL these stones are not for rolling that’s for sure… and we have cairns like in wales to pop our stones on to make the hills higher at the top… so its not that either i’m afraid richie my friend…
:))
dougie1
secret entrance to the still! ‘cos they’re STILL standing!
dinghysailor1 replied
unlike the rest of us you mean… lol…hic….:))))....still no…
bevanimage
Because they’re here, because they’re here, because they’re here…bit like us, really! Great view, ding, and lovely textures in the rocks and grasses.
dinghysailor1 replied
well yes now you put it like that .. but there is another reason too… lol…and thanks so much for the lovely comment
:))
kalaryder
Great scene
dinghysailor1 replied
thanks it was lovely if a little chilly that day…
MICKSPIXPHOTOS
They’re resting up a little and having a cup of hot lava ( oops ! I mean java ) before climbing the hill in the distance ?
dinghysailor1 replied
hi mick nice try!! i was just on my way home for one of those after climbing several of the above… now think hard… you do know this one i’m sure… damien above has nearly nearly got it all…..
rosiczka
very beautifu))))))
dinghysailor1 replied
thanks so much..;)))))))
MICKSPIXPHOTOS
Well, I’m thinking not so much of a hillfort as a “henge”...of more religious significance than military.
dinghysailor1 replied
Hi Mike you are getting cooler with religious… but military is good …!!
Damien’s guess above is pretty spot on ie : ” they’re in the borders and obviously on the top of a rather large hill, therefore I reckon they are part of some fortifications, maybe a look out post, a hill top fort etc…..”
but he’s just a whisker away and i’m still asking why are they here…. like this…… what is their function or purpose.. in this position….?
;))
ldeiter78
Great rock formations and scenery! Such unique landscape!
dinghysailor1 replied
thanks good friend – this is the scottish borders for you – it can look great in all weathers…
cheers
richiedean
When put like that, are they to make access difficult in darkness or mist …. ?
dinghysailor1 replied
wow definitely richie they make access more difficult in any weather!! you are rocking with this
:))
MICKSPIXPHOTOS
Ok, it could be a couple things depending on when they were placed. They could provide defilade for defenders when being attacked, or they could break the formation of an attacking army at a time when attacks were made in formation, or they could make life very difficult for attacking cavalry. Are any of those close ?
dinghysailor1 replied
Well done Mike!!
Its not a defilade (if I understand correctly) as the rocks are too small for defenders to shelter behind…and at less than a couple of feet high they would not impact on a formation attack and am not sure of how disciplined the attackers would be in any case…
but your third guess is CORRECT!!! ding ding ding!!
Damien and Richie have got most of it too in a brilliant close run jeopardy game…. well done all
Will post this shortly in the description box… but this was taken on Cademuir Hill just outside Peebles which is the site of an iron age hill fort…
These stones can be found on the NE of the hilltop which was potentially vulnerable to attack so the the huge jaggy stones are set into the ground like porcupines quills pointing downhill in a large gulley (100’x120’) sited in such a way as to be invisible to an attacking force until they breasted the rise and were upon them – it would definitely deter a horse attack and make men slow to pick their way through too…
Also referred to as a “chevaux-de-frises’ and used up to medieval times, someone told me there are only a couple of examples in scotland….
WOOHOO! battle over tho more details of an arthurian link on an associated pic to follow…
phew!

Maggie, Maggie!!!! Here I am … better late than never??? Richard (Dear Hubby) and I were just doing our usual evening chat and he asked me if I’d seen DingySailor’s rock image!!!! I looked at him with my typical blank expression … not a clue what he was talking about!!! And so off to the computer we ran … he was all about telling me that Mick figured it all out (our clever Mick!) and how well you led everyone through the question and answer dance!!!!! Just had to tell you all about this!!!! Then he made me scroll back up to extol the virtues of your excellent photography!!!!!! WHAT FUN!!!!! So … here I am … better late than never, lolol!!!!!! Job well done, girlfriend!!!!! You had us all in ooooh’s and ahhhhh’s!!!! Hugzzzz!!!!!

I can’t tell you how much I seem to miss!!!!! I’ll be coasting along and suddenly find the loveliest comments from 4 days ago!!!! GAK!!! How it happens, I’ll never know!!!! Were you at the Celcus in July/August of ‘05????? Lord have mercy!!!!!!!!! NOOOO KIDDING!!!!! I have oooooodles of shots of the crowds … heavens it was crowded!!!!! TELL me you’re in one of them!!!!!
