new issue
It may be a ‘new’ version of an old shot …but is it improved…? hmm….thats the question…. (CLICK ‘next’ to compare….)
The original untouched dawn mist was my 2nd ever post to rb with taken with my brand-new pocket fuji finepix A500… and it’s been the most popular shot in my gallery by far. It’s just reached the unbelievable figure of 100 faves – how awesome and mindboggling is that!!
So this plus a new challenge gave me the idea of tweaking it slightly to see if it could be improved on . I fiddled with the jpg as camera raw in PS Els 6…
Comments, comparisons and suggestions most welcome as I’d love to know what you think…..
Cheers and thanks everyone for all your awesome encouragement and support all along which has really got me hooked in and loving photography more than ever…
Thanks so much for looking too..

Oh all right …. each one is special in their way …. :)
dinghysailor1 replied
LOLOl… roflmao … you diplomat you … teehee…. cheers anyhow – much appreciated my friend!! I’m still swithering but am coming round to the clarity in this one… it took over a year to come round to a suggested crop so it takes some getting used to…:))))))

This is a beautiful piece of work Maggie….It really sparkles!.....It proves that with talent you can produce marvellous images with the most basic of cameras…who needs a DSLR….well done, you can add another favourite to your list!!
dinghysailor1 replied
cheers george – it was hard to take a bad picture that day – the light was perfect – but thanks so much for your lovely comments .. thrilled you like it!

Beautiful image Maggie …
dinghysailor1 replied
thanks tom.. much appreciated.. :))
Christopher E...
this is nice, but i like the original, reason being, is the lighting is more natural
when shooting under clouds the lighting is as bright as this one has been touched up to be :)
also, touching this one up, takes alittle away from that outstanding reflection in the water.
this is one great, but my fav..is the original :)
dinghysailor1 replied
thanks chris for you thoughtful appraisal and i know we both love untouched work as is…. so this is quite a departure for me … but think its worth a try to have em both up to get feedback as peoples tastes do differ.. and the longer we bubble the more our ‘eye’ can accustom to them… I see what you mean about the distraction from the reflection too…
cheers my friend – much appreciated!
:))
dougie1
you done good !

It looks Wonderful.. and the colours, more alive, add beauty to the image ! Well done..and yes I personally prefer this one !

Hi ding !!!!
Well I’ve looked at both and each have thier own merits …..
I think you should decide which image bangs your drum or matches the thrill of seeing this …...
no one else saw it for real, so we cant really comment …..
What I’m trying to say is ….... if it feels good, do it …........ :))
dinghysailor1 replied
wise words indeed !! thanks SO very much for all your indispensable help and encouragement my friend – hugely appreciated!
cheers :))))

of course have both up!! never know what the public will like, and its always a good thing to experiment. i was just giving my two cents (you asked..hehe) and the reason behind my choice :)
LindaR
this one just pops big time ~ what a difference the tweaking makes ~ I need to get me that program!!! of course, it comes from your eye and talent ~ but can you send me the name of your program? just stunning work Maggie xxx
dinghysailor1 replied
hi and huge thanks linda – I’m a dunce at this but its called photoshop elements 6 – is still going down in price (less than £50 a few months ago and falling now 7 is out)-its got more power than i’ll ever master! Essential is the great book by kelby and kloskowski (recommended by chris clark here on rb) that demystifies it bigtime – good luck if you decide to go for it … and there are some great folk out there able to help…
Patrick Morand
Wow, beautiful tones and colors. Very nice work Maggie.

very cool and colorful and full of life!
A sweet shot!
Damien Taylor
A real improvement Maggie, it looks sharper (without being over sharpened, a common sin!!) and more detailed. The original is still nice but a little softer, maybe it’s down to personal taste…but I give it the thumbs up!
dinghysailor1 replied
thanks so much damion – really helpful to hear your views..
cheers

jadeast
Both are extrodinarious! the older one obeys the artist’s rule that everything illuminated by a light source must take on the color of that light! The newer one with it’s increased saturation and contrasts to be natural would have some yellow or gold on the sunny side of the clouds
dinghysailor1 replied
Hey JD what thoughtful, helpful and lovely words – food for thought too..
cheers! ding ;)))
Wendy Slee
The difference is amazing…..subtle to the eye, but beautiful…. It is like you have opened a crack and let more sunlight in to bath the features of this scene. Plus your work has added depth and a lovely light to the whole landscape! That deserves an A+ !!!
dinghysailor1 replied
dear wendy – huge thanks for your great encouragement – you say the nicest things and I really appreciate it !!! cheers my friend and lets speak soon …

I think they are both beautiful and surprisingly, with just the small tweeks you have made, the two look like they have been taken at very different times. I think you totally deserve the 100 (probably more like 200 now ;)) lol ) favs – well done – you take stunning photos and are an inspiration!!!

Yeah, Chris has a point Maggie, but it’s all down to personal tastes.
I prefer this one, as (for me), the most striking thing in the image is the breaking light. There is more emphasis on that light here, which to me, gives the feeling that you get on a misty morning as the sun breaks through and you know that it’s going to be a nice, bright, spring day, and the mist is going to disappear.
What you’ve done here is what I would have done, and what I have written about in my Valley Of The Damned image…............expressed a feeling that the image stirs and that a camera alone can’t capture. Hope I’ve expressed that clearly enough :-)
kev
dinghysailor1 replied
thanks so much kev for your insightful comments above and yes I love this image of yours. I was fascinated to read your thoughts on this and it does ring bells… for instance when I got the prints (! yes of course) from my new digi camera I remember being disappointed and tossing ‘dawn mist’ aside as it didnt show what I saw that morning and must admit I’ve been so amazed by its popularity on here since….
Much appreciate it kev… cheers and thanks again

Hmmm, this is hard as both are excellent.I love being in both worlds, the challenge of the natural and tecreativity in photoshop. I believe i like the little bursts of color in the foliage in this one and the water seems a little crisper in this one…so i guess i like this one :O)

This is a tough one Maggie! The original has a quietness and contemplation about it and the colors are all blended and harmonious! This one definitely draws the eye into the image because of the great contrast between the blues and greens. Either way, an outstanding shot and really exquisite landscape!

Hey ding! Congratulations on the feature! Like you I’m torn between the two as they each have their own merits and the 1st is more natural…. I think the crop on this one would work very well on the original too as it seems to draw the eye in to the picture more. I feel this one has the greater impact at first glance and a bigger ‘wow’ factor due to its wonderful vibrancy.
Love ‘em both!!!!

Lovely shot – but I find it a bit too busy – there is no focal point to keeps one’s attention. I suggest that you have less foreground – this will have more impact to the shot

Stunning image.
KreativeKapture
They’re both great shots! But to compare: I like Dawn Mist better than New Issue.
Dawn Mist had a darker more mysterious look to it, and the foreground light green foliage circled your eye back to the far side of the water, and the two areas were the ‘meat’ of the photo.
Now it’s brighter, loses a bit of dark eerie-ness, and with the foreground earth lightened, there is too much lit up, it takes away from the great swoop of light greens that moves your eyes around. That said, it’s all I can really see to compare because they’re both great photos! WELL DONE!

wow what a lovely thoughtful comment that made me go back and look carefully at each and i see what you mean!! I SO appreciate you taking the time to think it over and explain it so carefully too.. cheers and thanks heaps again

I know I’ve looked at this beautiful image before Maggie and compared it with the original but thought I’d left a comment, at the risk of repeating myself, your reworking of the image was certainly more than worthwhile, the extra light and colour contrast the hanging mist even better and the result is stunningly beautiful,
Regards, Rod.
dinghysailor1 replied
thanks so much rod :))) I really appreciate your taking the time to look and return again too.. I enjoyed reworking this with the help of a scott kelby guide to elements 6… so much better than blundering completely blind… but really have heaps to learn…and it does take time away from getting out and about!
hoping alls well with you and thanks again

This doesn’t really need another comment, but I love the sunlight on the fields through the mist. I’d find it hard to choose between the two versions – they have their own moods.

Magnificent image Maggie and a fav. for sure! I’ll have to chase down the original but this one is simply tops!
George Cousins
Boyoboy, how dumb can I get? the original being right beside it..oh well, as we get older….etc.etc. lol! Seriously, they’re both great but I like the New Issue better, mostly because of the light and reflections. BTW, is that Scotch Broom in the foreground? We have lots of it here on Vancouver Island. One of your brethren brought it over in the beginning.
dinghysailor1 replied
hi george – thanks heaps for your lovely interest and perseverance..lol.. should have signposted it better….teehee..and of course for your thoughtful comment.. yes it is broom I think ...we also have yellow flowering gorse (similar but prickly) and both have been superb this year…lovely to think of it with you too…
cheers :))
George Cousins
Hi Maggie,
So far I think we only have the broom. There are enough prickly plants over here, we don’t need any more..lol! But the broom looks quite pretty along the highways and waterways, even though the local gardeners try to eradicate it. But it’s a tough stubborn Scot, it just keeps on thriving. I know all about them, I’m from Cape Breton Island, the original foothold of Scots in the New World..hehe! Cheers!
dinghysailor1 replied
how lovely to hear thats where you are…so you’ll be familiar with the skirl of the pipes and mass fiddle bands too…
:))
George Cousins
I misled you a bit, I was born and raised in Cape Breton and lived in Nova Scotia until 1989 when I moved across the continent to Vancouver Island. We also have Scots festivals here. On my site take a look at “entry of the Students” and “Gaelic Mod-1957”, taken at the Gaelic College in Cape Breton. Probably find them interesting!
