spectacular Maggie
HELUA
It´s breathtaking…just wonderful !!!
Stuart Chapman
Hope you’re liking life with the new toy :) Very nice. Like the smooth water as it sheens over the slowish exposure and the silhouetted posts and bird work well against the nicely lit background
dinghysailor1 replied
phew ! thanks chris stu and helua for that as i’d had an anxious 2 weeks snapping with fingers crossed and no chance to see that the camera could do – such a relief!
cheers
;))))))))) (happy sailor grins)

Wow – Gorgeous. Nicely captured…Looks so peaceful.
emolena
Gorgeous photo ! nice and quiet view !
JohnEvans
It does not disappoint ding. Well done. I can`t add anything to Stuart`s critique, except to say more with your new toy please.
lianne
You’re talking to a rank amateur here – lol – but from the standpoint of one who just appreciates fine art, Maggie, I’d say you’ve captured in all its perfection a real masterpiece. Everything about it is pleasing to the eye – the scene, the composition, the color, light – it’s all too lovely for words.
Sharon Johnstone
Stunning composition Maggie!!!!....It looks like you have already mastered that new camera!!!
dinghysailor1 replied
hey thanks everyone but am roglmao here sharon – its only beginners luck teehee….. but you are soo kind!!
Christopher E...
you did great on this, and call it what you like, but looks like someone shot this knowing their Settings!!! doesnt matter what type of camera you’re using, the settings are all the same! the composition on this is perfect, great lighting, and love that play with SS on the water. and best part of it..it isnt “touched up” :)
dinghysailor1 replied
Thanks shipmate (happy sailor grins )!! I hoped you’d like it chris as wanted to bring something back for your lovely untouchables group ;))))))))))))))))))))))
Matt Sillence
wonderful Maggie, just loving the loneliness of the bird, also the stumps of wood leading my eye out to see..grand job..
Sandy Stewart
Nicely composed and the slow shutter speed, combined with low iso and higher f-stop, lend for a lovely almost surreal feel to the water. The silhouettes stand out so nicely against the soft shades! Lovely soft contrasting layers of colors throughout! The only thing I would personally do is crop the beach off to the bottom of the wave. The reason being that nothing on the beach is in focus and so of no real interest to the viewer and with it cropped to the bottom of the wave, it creates a feeling of being right out on the water and the reflections of the pilings are even more noticeable and draw one’s eyes out to silhouetted pilings and bird. Lovely tranquil mood to this! :)
dinghysailor1 replied
ooh thanks for y our lovely comments sandy – I really appreciate you taking the time to think this all through and explain so carefully – its hugely helpful to me to hear your thinking …I was aware this shot may have benefitted from a tripod.. but it was 5am on my first day out and using my mini version would have put my new pride and joy in the sand!!
thanks again so much
cheers

Linda Ridpath
lovely shot Ding, you sure are enjoying the new toy!!!

Ohh… very romantic scene…
Hank Rodriguez
Looks perfect to me…What a lovely scene and effect!
SueAnne
Looks fantastic,I love the way the water looks
Robin Brown
Wee Tip Dinghy, set the exposure compensation to 1/3 under expose. The colours will have a bit more bite. That could be done using curves later but I prefer to do it when I take the shot.
I’d play around with the prog modes for a wee while & keep an eye on the setings the camera uses. Most of my shot are under exposed by a 3rd of a stop but not all. It depends on what I want to achieve.
I tend to use aperture priority so I can control the DOF but when I want to concentrate on movement I use shutter priority.
Now for your pic above, the compo is excellent the movement in the water is 1st class all I’d do with this one is tweak the curves. xx

Anne O'Connor
Very nice Maggie, The bird is the little bit extra to a great image.
jadeast
I’m in a bit of disagreement about cropping the dark area off the bottom of the image, Maggie, I believe it helps lead your eye into the image and would be much less effective without it.
phoggy
Very nice work Maggie, have fun with your new toy!
phoggy
Oh and congratulations on the feature!

Nice of the birdy to sit for you…................good capture…............
The InnerNorth...
ooooh thats a good 1 m,
a good trick to do is run
your iso 100 the your f. stop up to 22 or as far as it will go ,,then your shutter speed down to 5” might need a tripod and it will come out like this here
as the water is moving it will take on a ice look to it ?
The InnerNorth...
+ NIKON .s RULE heheh

+ always remeber the first rule in photography ,,,???

Ian Robertson
I like this one – you have used the pilons nicely in the framing.
Dusker
Well you can see you are happy with your camera. My comments: I would like to see just a little cropped from the bottom to remove the clutter at the bottom. But dont remove the actual water line. Also would like to see cropped from the left a little to bring those pylons closer in just a tad. My eye is fighting, big pylon or bird as the focal point. But be pleased!!! Calming photo. Cheers Heather
dinghysailor1 replied
thanks for the thoughtful comments.. i did something along your suggested lines in the tweaked version above….do you think i should have gone further in..? lovely to have your valued opinion and really appreciate you taking the time to look..

I have found that once I have worked out what shot I am looking for, I am inclined to leave my feet where they are! Great suggestion by InnerNorth!
Go Nikons! But you still need a good eye and understanding of what makes a good photo. Cheers.
dinghysailor1 replied
thanks so much again my friend and have posted a new version…

Dusker
Well I may be biased but I like this composition. It also looks a little lighter, bringing out the reflections a bit more. The rule of thirds is working better for me. I will be interested to see what other feedback is like. Suggest you ask others to look again for you. Cheers.
dinghysailor1 replied
thanks again.. I tried a pano but it lost the feeling of thirds…really appreciate your great kindness and support!

Jan Timmons
Love all three versions, Maggie. What a beautiful scene and composition. I like both the bit o’ beach when I enlarge the photo and without it in the smaller size in the sidebar. Looks as though you received plenty of kudos and advice. Well done with the pelican silhouetted on the post.
dinghysailor1 replied
LOL thanks jan!! it was a superb scene to wake up to with a new camera and I’m still swithering over the different crops… .. thought it may be easier to be ruthless after a few months.. but not yet it isnt…LOL
cheers

Jan Timmons
Swithering, eh? Me, too. The more external disk drives I buy, the more ruthless I become, however. Isn’t it great to get so much advice when we ask for it?

Karen Betts
Beautiful work all 3, love the light and how the see is more silky if that is the right term. Lol just for me i do like the little edge of the beach as the sea touches but might be i have a thing for pebbles. But as suggested above the cropping does focus you more on the posts and that wonderful bird. For a first shot with your new DSLR totally amazing, mine was of a succulent. LOL
dinghysailor1 replied
LOL i’d just unwrapped it on the plane and tried to swallow the manual whole, but then at 5 am its just post luck and click in a hit or miss way … so what a thrill to see this 2 weeks later…
