flying fish
Here on the lovely river tweed near Selkirk in scottish borders the salmon are swimming hard against the flow to return to their spawning grounds upstream without stopping for a bite to eat and have a tough job trying to leap up some of the many obstacles in their way…
I caught this slippery customer at a salmon ladder outside selkirk in the scottish borders but already the light was against me…. the spray on the lens from the falls didn’t help much either… Taken from this side of the river he was was leaping near the opposite bank in the very top left hand corner of this :
Settings at full zoom on a compact Olympus SP560 UZ were shutter priority ..f4.5, 1/500sec, ISO 80…
Any comments, tips or suggestions most welcome ;)
What I really should have done was drive at least a 10mile detour to find a bridge , cross the river and grab a machete to cut my way through to a better spot on the opposite bank where the lighting at least would have been better…
Of course when i see the amazing works by the skilfully talented dsargent
like this and this I wish I could do it over …
But at least I caught something – and you should have seen the ones that got away…............ teeheehehee ….......
:))

I wish I could get a shot like that also. That is way it is out of print. He is one of the best wildlife photographers in the world.
The more I look at your example image on the right the more I think that should be what you should be posting.

(may try one with buster posing with jaws agape. ...teeehee… if I can get mr fish to do a replay….teehee…)

Pretty good to catch a shot like that because you never know when a fish is about to launch out of the water and the water spray is good too.
dinghysailor1 replied
hi thanks jacqui – they kept launching everywhere but where I was pointing mostly!! it was just a lottery so am really in awe of the really good captures out there…

I think it’s a brilliant capture Maggie when you think of the ‘suddenness’ of a fish jumping and managing to catch it at all!! Well done you!

Great shot Maggie, awesome timing
Al Williscroft
Wow love this capture!!!
Stuart Chapman
I have seen this on the likes of Blue Peter and various nature programmes over the years and still can’t believe it. It must be such a magnificent thing to see for real. Love the timing and the light on the fish and the water spray is also great.
dinghysailor1 replied
oh it was thrilling to see stu – they were popping out all over the place but almost never where I was aiming my camera teehee – and the sad thing is they keep trying and trying in the wrong place and when the water is too low – none of the ones jumping that day seemed to make it over the falls ..and must have been exhausted! If you are ever in scotland between oct and dec I recommend this place – they have live underwater video links plus highlights of the season… (Philiphaugh viewing centre, Selkirk within an hour of Edinburgh)
Thanks everyone for your amazing comments!
