a low bow...

a low bow...

Such an unusual sight as we came to a dip in the lovely border countryside late one afternoon . The hollow in the terrain was covered in what looked like a flattened dome of rainbow colours – imagine 3 bubblers joy…!

jen whyte and heather croft will have great captures too…!

here is heathers’ sideways rainbow view of the same…with heaps more detail…

and jens Aura …after the rain where you can see a glimpe of sunlight….

Reading links from the atmospheric optics site it looks as if it could be a ‘low’ (rain)bow … linked to the sun (erm…what sun…teehee) being high in the sky….

what an amazing sight! This is wierd as only a month ago I saw a low rainbow in my rear view mirror, as it seemed to rise up from beneath the horizon. It was so freaky – of course I did a u-turn and drove back to get a better look but it seemed to rise up more as I watched. I am so glad you posted this…it is fascinating!

  • dinghysailor1 replied

thanks so much wendy! do check out the links given it the AO groups guidelines – they are phenomenally well illustrated with brilliant pics and fascinating info..which even I could grasp… you won’t regret it..promise!

From heather’s site she gave the location, and from Atmosperic Optics I had previously downloaded Titlting Sun LesCrowley’s page on Low Bows shows that the height of this bow was when the Sun was ~35 degrees in Altitude. Simple math actually!

  • dinghysailor1 replied

wow that’s even more amazing …. brilliant even! what may seem elementary to you dear friend looks pretty impressive from this dinghy!! ....... thanks so much shipmate! I am more used to tide tables…teehee..

heather also dated her photo to last week. And as the Sun is quickly getting lower each day, that was critical info.

  • hcroft

    hcroft

Well it was more than a flutter – It was a dive into a parking spot which just happened to be right by us when we caught it. Good job there was nothing behind us! Anyway you are right we were in a flutter but cameras were at the ready – just like the true professionals we are!! God was shining on us that day. Cometman your comments are really brilliant. Don’t understand maths but if it gives us views like this it goes up in my estimation – Hx Good shot Maggie – love the flowers in the foreground.
