Gaea, The Earth Goddess
Acrylic Painting on Canvas
Large size 100cm x 100cm
looks alot more impressive in person on the large canvas!
i dont think my camera has done it full justice
hope you enjoy.
the Earth Goddess, Gaia was the second of the primeval gods to emerge at the creation of the universe.
The first being Khaos (the lower atsmosphere air and winds),
Gaia was followed in quick succession by Tartaros (the Underworld) and Eros (Love the life-bringer).
She was the great mother of all : the heavenly gods were descended from her union with Ouranos (the sky), the sea-gods from her union with Pontos (the sea), the Gigantes from her mating with Tartaros (the hell-pit) and mortal creatures were born from her earthy flesh.
She is usually portrayed as inseperable from her native element, the earth.
one with the world, part of the world, mother of the world, to the world, she is the world.
In my painting here, I have depicted her with many clues..
She is luminous, like the moon itself, powerful and full of light,
The symbol on her headdress is the symbol of her womanliness, her motherly instincts, her beauty,
The symbol tattooed on her cheek is the chiron healing symbol, for she is Mother Earth, with the power to heal and give life
The pattern etched into her armband is the hourglass, representing the question… How long will she protect and nurture us, the world, before we force her to abandon us…

Glad to hear that Jodi…I don’t believe life is meant to be a competition…it’s just become that way through the commercial sector wanting top spot :)
dimarie replied
Wouldnt it be grand if competition was no place in the art world…
have you seen the film “art school confidential”? it touches on the whole concept of art for the sake of art vs art competing…
So now the comp is over with, sadly my piece didnt get a mention, but neither did a few other ones that were amazing..
The winning piece tho, was brilliant, and I’m glad that a beautiful artwork came first!
ah, i never expected to come close to winning, the money would of helped alot tho lol!
I think i entered them as a way of proving to myself that My art is good enough to stand along side everybody elses… and of course that small hope that a piece of mine had a chance to be published.

Hi Jodi, you asked have you seen the film “art school confidential”? No , I haven’t but will look for it in the local video shop, thanks…I watch ABC2 on weekends when they have some great art shows on.
Art for art sake would be good….I use to enter comps years ago and was recognised a little for doing so but stopped due to lack of arts for art sake within the comps.
You said _ I think i entered them as a way of proving to myself that My art is good enough to stand along side everybody elses_. Jodi you are a gifted artist, you have inner vision which is what makes a noticeable and good artist. Everyone will see your art differently, as the old saying goes: art is all in the eye of the beholder. Please accept your gift with good grace and recognise it instead of doubting yourself….as long as you love your art and what you are doing that is all that really matters. Satisfy yourself first and then others will be satisifed…the flow of energy.
The works that won the Gaia comp were all fabulous works, as were a lot of other works but they are not the only ones to be published. Not sure if they have finished going through them all yet and decided which ones will be published so you never know yours may still be published in the book, which will be a great accomplishment for you.
