Lily Beetle by dilouise

I was really excited when I saw this brilliant red beetle in the garden, that is until I realised it was happily eating away at the lilies! It’s about 8mm long and the larvae are orange covered with black slime, which also feed on the plants. This was taken in West Yorkshire but I think they’re fairly widespread in England.

This is an excellent capture but they really are a pest. I’ve had loads in my garden today (south Wales). They lay their eggs on the lilies and the grubs devastate the plants.

  • Thanks very much for your comment. They certainly are pests and have damaged the plants considerably.

oh yes! I love those red beetles. take a look here ;)

  • They’re so attractive and multiplying fast in the garden, perhaps it’s the warm weather we’re experiencing at the moment that’s bringing them out.
