Digital painting created using Corel Painter vX for a WWF FDC envelope issue for Penrhyn (not the one in Wales, the island in the South Pacific). Dolphins are beautiful critters, but boring to paint. Not only are they grey and not that interestingly marked, but most ref shots show them either on the surface of the water, or jumping out of it. Trying to come up with 4 sufficiently different scenes for the issue is always a challenge when dolphins are the subject. I rarely get underwater shots of them swimming around coral reefs. So, when I saw this pic of a leaping critter, I decided to have a bit of fun with it and have it leaping right off the page. This is the unvingetted version, but in the print version, it’s still jumping out of the vignette. The island in the background was added as there was no land visible in the ref pic. Why don’t the WWF use photos? That’s one very good reason. Often the ref material is shot on the other side of the world to where the FDC’s are going and so the locations are all wrong. Most of the ref shots for this issue were shot in the Atlantic off South America…not a lot of coral atolls in the Atlantic….

Outstanding dear ‘O’!! Love how it’s jumping out the frame – such energy!! xx
Thanks Tai. It’s that aspect which made it worthwhile painting! X

Superb work, jumping right into my lap…almost ;O)
So Santa’s getting ready at his pad…where did the year go??
One of his little elves would be handy to help out around here me thinks!
Take care, wishing you season greetings and all that kinda stuff ..xoxoxo
Thanks Karen. This year I’m taking after the dolphins and am not doing Xmas at all. It sort of snuck up on me and caught me unprepared…. Had rather a lot of other stuff on my mind….I assume you are better organised and prepared….have a good one! Xhxhxhxhxhchxhxhxh

marvellous painting, Owen!
Thanks Hillie. One of the more interesting paintings of dolphin I’ve done. The splash was the most interesting part to paint. The dolphin took about 30 minutes the splash a couple of hours. X

Love Dolphins, but I haven’t seen one nearby leaping this high!
One day maybe ….
Great work as usual!
Thanks Trish.
I actually truncated the leap slightly so it was jumping even higher than seen here! X

What a great piece – full of energy (unlike most of us at this time of year). It sure is a beautiful creature and you’ve done a wonderful job as always………. :) XXXX
Note to self: be a dolphin in my next life. If leaping out of the water and catching fish is all you have to think about, that sounds good to me. Mind you, an otter has even more fun and the Japanese dont eat otters….. Do they???
I’ll take my chances. Put me down for an ‘otteroplasty’ next time round. Xxxxx

wow! that’s probably paradise!… when I see all the snow outside my home, your picture make me fantasize! lol
Thanks! Well, I don’t live there, but where I do live it’s sunny and the Ocean is that color and there are dolphins around, and we even have a couple of palm trees in our backyard, and so it’s pretty close to ‘paradise’. X
